“The artist residency provided by the Stowaway Society is a nurturing and supportive program, allowing creatives to research, explore, and further strengthen aspects of their personal artistic practice, granting the artist freedoms to structure their experience to their creative needs.
An aspect that benefitted me greatly was the opportunity to create my own set of expectation sand outcomes for my time in Provincetown, which included: working on site with models from the community, creating a solid portfolio of reference images for future works; an open studio day which fostered engagement and interactions between myself and the community, including those visiting town who have followed my creative evolution via social media; and an on site exhibit of already completed works which tied in with the weekly gallery strolls that occur in Provincetown.
Having the opportunity to work in another environment, removing myself from my permanent studio and home city, benefitted me greatly simply in terms of having the luxury to set a different pace for myself, which cultivated ideas for future projects and bodies of work. Starting a new series of works onsite, having an opportunity to discuss my work with other queer folks and creatives, and nurturing existing relationships with fellow artists who live in the community was invaluable. The Stowaway Society also offered resources in the way of introductions to artists who were new to me, and who I now have plans to collaborate on future projects; as well as local galleries and curators, one of which led to a future solo exhibition (“Treadwell Gallery”).
Overall, I found this experience to be productive, educational, and creatively affirming. I’m very grateful to have had this unique opportunity and will cherish the memory of my time working there. Indeed, a very magical land at the tip of Cape Cod.
”Andrew’s work is currently on display for sale in the Treadwell Gallery. He will be returning in Summer 2021 to present a full exhibition of his work at the Treadwell Gallery.
